Due to an increase in workload, we are seeking an Assistant Engineer to be based in the rail team in our London office to provide engineering support on a range of projects predominantly for our client. Job purpose: The job holder will support the technical delivery of projects, undertaking engineering activities across the full Project Lifecycle including developing the scope and requirements, managing the production and approval of designs and assurance deliverables. A large proportion of our work is undertaken within frameworks and will consequently require the need to be seconded into a client office from time to time. The post may require visits to various site locations on the national rail network, stations/tracks/depots and the like. There may also be some limited requirements to make visits to site during engineering hours. Responsibilities / Accountabilities: The candidate will work within project teams and will report to team leaders and project managers. The priorities of the role are likely to include: * Assisting with the preparation of technical notes, drawings and reports * Assisting with preparation of technical specifications * Managing task budgets on behalf of project managers * Management of Civil/Structural Engineering designers, co-ordination of multi-disciplines requirements with the development of civil engineering solutions * Capability to understand Programme deadline to meet cost and engineering solutions * Management and coordination of feasibility studies, surveys and design packages ensuring compliance with applicable standards, specifications and procedures Additionally whilst on secondment, the candidate must be capable of a degree of autonomous working involving: * Preparation of design, checking drawings & writing, reviewing and accepting civil engineering scope for designers and contractors * Provision of technical advice to project teams within area of expertise and contribute to successful system integration through involvement of relevant discipline engineers and other parties * Following the engineering control processes, programme-level and project-level plans Requirements / qualifications / experience: * The ideal candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge. * A sound academic knowledge of civil engineering in general and the rail industry in particular * Knowledge of relevant European codes and standards * Strong communication skills with fluency in verbal and written English * Numerate * Computer literate in MS Office package (or similar) * Problem solving & analysis skills * Team player but with an ability to work independently when required * Planning & organisational skills * Motivated to deliver high quality * Commitment to professional and personal development leading towards chartered status * Knowledge of maintenance techniques and good industry practice * Knowledge of safety legislation The minimum qualifications for this position are: * First degree (MEng or BEng) in civil engineering, * A post-graduate qualification (MSc or PhD) is desirable * Chartered Member of the ICE or IStructE * Graduate Member of the ICE or IStructE with extensive experience + post graduate design experience Our Culture: Safety & health conscious, flexible working conditions, collaborative & friendly with regular social activities.
