Providing you show enough initiative and suitable level of performance, you may be offered the opportunity to stay on with the school the following year, after a successful spell as a teaching assistant, to begin your secondary teacher training. School Details The school is a larger than average secondary school and has almost 1,400 pupils on roll. It's based in the South London borough of Bromley and has most recently been deemed by Ofsted to be "Outstanding". Ofsted found that pupils are treated as individuals and, as a result of this, flourish. Teaching Assistant Expectations As a graduate teaching assistant, you will be working with key stage three and four pupils in all areas of the secondary curriculum. Providing on your subject specialism, you may be based within your specific department and act as a subject specialist teaching assistant. For example, English and maths graduates may be based in their respective departments. You will be expected to support pupils as a teaching assistant on an individual and group basis within the classroom. Some of the pupils you will support may have additional learning difficulties, such as ADHD, ASD or dyslexia. As part of your teaching assistant role, you will be required to attend occasional professional development sessions that will aim to train and hone your skills with pupils. This will be a huge benefit to candidates who are determined to become excellent teachers. Experience and Qualifications The school will only be considering candidates who have a degree. Your subject does not have to have come from a specific discipline, but what is important is your desire to teach at secondary school level in the recent future. As for your experience, you should have some experience, paid or voluntary, of working with children in an educational setting. Previous experience of working as a teaching assistant is preferable.
